چکیده

Recent sediment accumulation rates in Adventfjorden (Svalbard), a small subpolar fjord, were determined by Pb and Cs dating. Modern rates in the central basin decrease downfjord from 1.87 to 0.87 cm y−1 (2.6 to 1.19 g cm−2 y−1). Comparison of the modern values (1986–2001) with older ones (1963–86) reveals a marked increase in sediment accumulation rates in the last ten years. This correlates well with recent climate changes (warming and increase in precipitation). * The research was funded by the Polish Ministry of Scientific Research and Information Technology (State Committee for Scientific Research), grant No 6PO405621. Bojanowski Comparison with particulate matter flux data indicates that a portion of the sediment is passed on to Isfjorden.

Environmental change and atmospheric contamination on Svalbard: sediment chronology*

Sediment cores collected from eight lakes along the western coast of Svalbard as part of a project investigating atmospheric pollution and environmental change in Arctic regions were dated radiometrically using natural (Pb) and artificial (Cs and Am) fallout radionuclides. At four sites the sedimentation rates were relatively uniform, and in consequence the Pb dates were relatively unambiguous....

Recent environmental change and human impact on Svalbard: the lake-sediment geochemical record *

As part of a broader investigation into recent environmental change on Svalbard, the inorganic geochemical record of six lake-sediment cores was analysed. The major temporal trends in sediment elemental composition are driven by variations in two contrasting sediment components, both derived from catchment soils: (1) mineral matter, and (2) soil organic matter (SOM), enriched in Fe and Mn oxide...

A Holocene Sediment Record of Phosphorus Accumulation in Shallow Lake Harris, Florida (USA) Offers New Perspectives on Recent Cultural Eutrophication

We studied a complete Holocene sediment record from shallow (zmax = 9.7 m) Lake Harris, Florida (USA) to infer the historical development of the lake and its current eutrophic status. We used (210)Pb and (14)C to date the 5.9-m sediment sequence (core LH-6-13) and determined accumulation rates for bulk sediment, organic matter, calcium carbonate, phosphorus fractions and biogenic silica fractio...

Monothalamous foraminifera from West Spitsbergen fjords, Svalbard: a brief overview

During the 2004 summer season, 14 sediment samples were collected in Kongs− fjorden and Isfjorden, West Spitsbergen, from 6 down to 345 m water−depth (mwd). The samples yielded abundant assemblage of monothalamous foraminifera, belonging to almost 40 morphotypes. Our qualitative (>125 μm) and quantitative data (125–500 μm) allowed to distinguish three water−depth related assemblages in both Kon...

Glacimarine sedimentation processes at Kronebreen and Kongsvegen, Svalbard

Tidewater glaciers deposit sediment at their terminus, thereby reducing the relative water depth. Reduced water depth can lead to increased glacier stability through decreased rates of iceberg calving, glacier thinning and submarine melting. Here we investigate sedimentation processes at the termini of Kronebreen and Kongsvegen, Svalbard. We mapped the fjord floor bathymetry in August 2009 and ...
